Donald Trump Gets Basic English Lesson After Ridiculous Comment About His ‘Pronouns’

In a recent interview on Fox News, former President Donald Trump left critics and social media users shaking their heads after a perplexing comment about pronouns. During the second part of an interview that aired on Tuesday, host Laura Ingraham brought up Vice President Kamala Harris's social media bio, which includes her pronouns "she/her" to indicate her gender identity.

Ingraham then asked Trump, "What are your pronouns?" to which the Republican nominee responded, "I have no — I don’t want pronouns." When Ingraham pressed further, asking if he was "fluid," Trump dismissed the concept, stating, "Nobody even knows what that means. Ask her to describe exactly what that means."

This response, however, revealed a glaring lack of understanding. Pronouns are a fundamental part of the English language, essential for describing people and things without repeatedly using names or nouns. They are also a crucial tool for trans or nonbinary individuals, or their allies, to affirm their gender identity, avoid misgendering, and signal respect. For this reason, many people include their pronouns in their social media bios.

Republicans, who have been systematically attacking LGBTQ+ rights, particularly trans rights, across the country, often ridicule those who state their pronouns. Some have even introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of pronouns that don’t correspond to a person’s sex assigned at birth.

Trump’s remark sparked a flurry of reactions and mockery online. Twitter users were quick to point out the absurdity of his statement:

  • "everyone has pronouns asshole it comes free with the whole speaking a language thing" — @leftfemme
  • "This grown ass man who was PRESIDENT really needs basic elementary school english lessons I’m crying" — @Capriiart
  • "Pronouns are actually basic English and pretty easy to understand" — @KaydonsThoughts
  • "there is an actual candidate on a presidential ballot who doesn’t legitimately know what a pronoun is, and there are real human beings out there who will vote for him. unbelievable country we live in" — @ConnYoungberg

The backlash was swift and unforgiving, with many pointing out the irony of a former president displaying such a basic lack of understanding of English grammar. Trump, who once claimed to "know the best words," was clearly out of his depth on this topic.

The incident has not only highlighted Trump's apparent ignorance but also underscored the broader issue of the Republican Party's stance on LGBTQ+ rights. As the nation continues to grapple with issues of gender identity and expression, Trump's comments serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in an increasingly polarized political landscape.
