North Korean Officials Seek Medicine for Kim's Health Problems Related to Obesity, Seoul Says

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly facing serious health issues linked to obesity, prompting his officials to seek new medications from abroad. According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kim, who is 40 years old, has regained weight and is exhibiting symptoms of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Health Concerns

Kim Jong Un, known for his heavy drinking and smoking habits, comes from a lineage marked by heart-related ailments. Both his father and grandfather, who ruled North Korea before him, succumbed to heart disease. Observers noted that Kim had previously lost a significant amount of weight in 2021, likely due to dietary changes. However, recent footage from state media indicates that he has returned to his previous weight of approximately 140 kilograms (308 pounds).

During a closed-door briefing, lawmakers were informed by the NIS that Kim's health has deteriorated, placing him in a high-risk category for heart disease. Lawmaker Lee Seong Kweun reported that Kim has shown signs of high blood pressure and diabetes since his early 30s. Another lawmaker, Park Sunwon, suggested that Kim's obesity may be exacerbated by his lifestyle choices, including drinking, smoking, and stress.

Search for Treatment

The NIS revealed that North Korean officials are actively seeking new medications to address Kim's health issues, particularly for his suspected high blood pressure and diabetes. Given North Korea's secretive nature, it remains challenging for outsiders to ascertain the true state of Kim's health. The NIS has a mixed track record in accurately reporting developments within the isolated nation.

Succession Speculation

Kim's health has become a focal point of international concern, especially since he has not publicly designated a successor to manage the country's nuclear arsenal, which poses a threat to the United States and its allies. The NIS maintains that Kim's preteen daughter, Kim Ju Ae, is being groomed as a potential heir. However, they caution that she could be supplanted by one of her siblings, as she has not been officially named as her father's successor.

Speculation surrounding Kim Ju Ae intensified when she began accompanying her father at significant public events in late 2022. State media has referred to her as Kim Jong Un's “most beloved” child, showcasing her rising political stature and closeness to her father. The NIS noted that over 60% of her public appearances have involved military events alongside Kim.

As the world watches closely, the implications of Kim's health and the potential for a succession plan remain critical issues for North Korea's future stability and international relations.
