Italy’s Famous ‘Path of Love’ Reopens After More Than 12 Years
One of the most iconic and romantic trails in the world, Italy’s Via dell’Amore (“Path of Love”), is set to reopen on Saturday, July 27, after a lengthy refurbishment that has captivated both locals and tourists alike. The Italian Tourism Ministry announced this eagerly awaited news on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the region.
A Scenic Gem
The Via dell’Amore stretches 900 meters (2,950 feet) along a breathtaking panoramic route that overlooks the sparkling sea. Nestled between the picturesque municipalities of Riomaggiore and Manarola, this trail is located in the northern region of Liguria, within the stunning Cinque Terre National Park. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the path has long been a favorite among couples and nature lovers, offering stunning views and a romantic atmosphere.
A Long-Awaited Reopening
The trail has been closed since September 2012, following a landslide that injured four Australian tourists. The reopening process has been complex due to the path's fragile cliffside location, presenting significant engineering challenges. The Tourism Ministry highlighted the precarious nature of the trail, which is carved into the rock between the sky and the sea.
Refurbishment work commenced on January 14, 2022, and was completed on July 19, 2024. Specialized companies undertook the project, utilizing helicopters to transport materials and installing a stainless steel net and deep bolts for safety. Rock climbers skillfully maneuvered equipment along the walls, suspended by ropes and steel cables, ensuring the path's integrity.
The total investment for this ambitious project was nearly €24 million (approximately $26 million), funded by various ministries in Italy.
An Open-Air Museum
Upon reopening, the path will be managed by the Municipality of Riomaggiore, transforming it into an open-air museum. From July 27 to August 8, access will be exclusive to residents of the Cinque Terre, as well as those from Levanto, La Spezia, and former residents of Riomaggiore and their families. Starting August 9, tourists will be welcomed, but they must book in advance through the website www.viadellamore.info, which is currently under construction. A fee of €10 (approximately $11) will be required, and guided tours will be available.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, access will be limited to a maximum of 400 people per hour, divided into groups of 100 every 15 minutes. Visitors will enter from Riomaggiore and follow a one-way route toward Manarola.
A Celebration of Heritage
The official inauguration of the “Path of Love” took place on Friday evening, attended by government officials and local authorities. Giacomo Giampedrone, commissioner for the safety work, expressed pride in restoring the Via dell’Amore to its former glory. He emphasized the importance of safety and environmental protection throughout the restoration process.
“It was a job as complex as it was spectacular, carried out exactly like the recovery of a work of art of inestimable value,” Giampedrone stated. He extended an invitation to all to visit Liguria and experience the beauty of the Via dell’Amore, a unique place suspended between the sky and the sea.
As the reopening date approaches, excitement builds for both locals and tourists eager to explore this enchanting trail once again. The Via dell’Amore promises to be a breathtaking journey through one of Italy’s most beautiful landscapes, rekindling the romance and allure that has drawn visitors for generations.
